Half-Round Gutters
Half-round gutters are a simple semicircular trough, the shape gutters had long before K-style became common. They suit older and classic homes where the gutter is part of the architecture rather than something to hide.

What half-round gutters look like
From the end, a half-round gutter is half a circle with a rolled bead along the front edge. It hangs from visible brackets and drains into round downspouts instead of rectangular ones. The look is soft and traditional: rounded edges, slim downspouts and exposed hangers that read as deliberate detail. Common sizes are 5-inch and 6-inch, with round downspouts usually 3 or 4 inches across.
Where half-round fits best
Victorians, Tudors, stone and brick Colonials, farmhouses and early twentieth-century homes across New Jersey and Bucks County often wore half-round gutters originally. In historic districts, a local commission may expect gutters that suit the period, and half-round in copper or a dark aluminum is usually the closest fit. Check your town's rules before replacing gutters on a listed or district house. Some modern homes use half-round deliberately for a clean, minimal edge.
The capacity tradeoff
A rounded trough holds less water than a flat-bottomed K-style gutter of the same width. On a modest roof that rarely matters. On a large or steep roof plane, the usual answers are to step up a size, to add an extra downspout so each run drains a shorter stretch, or to use larger round downspouts. The same rounded interior has an upside: it has no corners for debris to pack into, so it rinses clean easily.
Brackets, hangers and round downspouts
- Fascia brackets: screw to the fascia board where the house has one
- Roof straps: attach under the roofing where there is no flat fascia, common on older eaves
- Round downspouts: plain or corrugated, held by decorative or simple straps
- Outlets and elbows sized to the round downspout so water drops cleanly
Aluminum or copper
Aluminum half-round gives the classic shape at a lower cost and comes painted in traditional colors such as black, dark bronze and white. Copper half-round is the historic choice: its seams are soldered, it weathers to a brown and eventually green patina, and it can outlast the roof beneath it. The half-round cost guide compares the two.
How a half-round job is installed
Half-round is more often installed in sections than formed as one seamless piece, so joints are sealed or, on copper, soldered. Bracket spacing and pitch are set carefully because the brackets are visible and any dip shows. If you are replacing old half-round, the crew checks whether existing brackets or straps can be reused and whether the wood behind them is sound. Read more about gutter replacement.

Process
Do half-round gutters overflow more than K-style?
At the same width they carry less water, so on a big or steep roof they can overflow sooner. Sized correctly, with enough downspouts, they handle New Jersey storms well. The estimate should account for the roof area each run drains.
Can half-round gutters go on a house without fascia?
Yes. Roof straps fasten beneath the roofing and hold the brackets out at the eave, which is how many older homes were originally fitted. The roofing has to be in good enough shape to accept them, which the installer checks first.
Are half-round gutters harder to clean?
Usually easier. The smooth curved interior has no inside corners for debris to pack into, so a scoop and a hose rinse clean it quickly. The exposed brackets do make some guard styles fit less neatly, so ask before adding covers.
Can I mix half-round gutters with rectangular downspouts?
It can be done with adapters, but round downspouts are the usual match and look intended. Mixing shapes is most common when a homeowner wants larger capacity from an existing half-round run. Book a free estimate to talk through the options.
