Fleece-Backed Roofs
A fleece-backed roof is a single-ply membrane, usually TPO, PVC or EPDM, with a layer of polyester fleece bonded to its underside. The fleece changes how the sheet is attached and what it can be installed over, which is why it is its own category rather than just another membrane.

What the fleece does
The fleece gives the membrane a textured back that adhesive grips firmly. Fleece-backed sheets are fully glued down, usually with a low-rise foam adhesive applied in beads or a spray, instead of being held with screws and plates. With no fasteners through the membrane and no loose sheet between attachment points, the roof does not flutter in wind, and there are fewer holes for water to find. The fleece also adds a cushion that helps the sheet resist punctures from below.
Where fleece-backed systems fit
Fleece-backed membranes are a strong option for recovering an existing roof, where the new sheet is glued over the old surface after wet areas are removed, because the fleece bridges small irregularities. They also suit decks where screws are a problem, such as some concrete or lightweight decks, and occupied buildings where the noise and vibration of mechanical fastening is unwelcome. On a simple residential porch roof, a standard adhered membrane often does the same job.
How it is installed
The existing roof is inspected, and wet insulation or damaged areas are cut out and replaced. The surface is cleaned, adhesive is applied, and the fleece-backed sheet is rolled into it and pressed down for full contact. Seams are welded for TPO and PVC versions or taped for EPDM, and each sheet has a strip along its edge with no fleece, so the overlap bonds membrane to membrane. Edges, walls and drains are flashed the same way as any single-ply roof, with the edge feeding into the gutters or scuppers.
Comparing it with the plain membrane
A fleece-backed sheet is thicker and costs more than the same membrane without fleece. The value is in the attachment method and the substrate it can handle. If your roof can take a standard TPO, PVC or EPDM install, the estimate will say so. If it is a recover over an uneven surface or a deck that should not be fastened into, fleece-backed is often the better fit.

Frequently asked questions

Pricing

Call (888) 611-3987 or request a free estimate online. The office is open Monday–Friday 7:00 AM–5:00 PM; Saturday 9:00 AM–4:00 PM.
Process
Is a fleece roof a different material from TPO or EPDM?
No. It is one of those membranes with a polyester fleece bonded to the back. The top surface behaves like the base membrane, and repairs use the same material.
Can a fleece-backed membrane go over my old roof?
Often, if the old roof is mostly dry and well attached and the building code allows another layer. Wet sections are removed first, and a core cut or moisture check shows how much.
Why choose adhesive over screws?
Fully adhered sheets do not flutter in wind, have no fasteners through the membrane and spread wind loads across the whole roof. Installing them is also quieter for people inside the building.
