Shingle Roofs
Asphalt shingles cover most pitched roofs in New Jersey because they shed water well, come in many colors and are straightforward to repair. A shingle roof is more than the shingles you see, though. It is a stack of layers that only works when each one is installed in the right order.

Architectural and 3-tab shingles
Three-tab shingles are a single flat layer cut into three tabs, which gives the roof a uniform, brick-like pattern. Architectural shingles, also called dimensional or laminated shingles, bond two layers together so the roof has depth and shadow lines. Architectural shingles are heavier, hold up better in wind and usually last longer, which is why most new roofs in the area use them. Three-tab shingles cost less and still make sense for sheds, garages or matching an existing section.
What goes under the shingles
A shingle roof is built from the deck up. Damaged plywood or plank decking is replaced first. A self-adhering ice-and-water membrane goes along the eaves and in the valleys, where ice dams and heavy runoff do the most damage.
Synthetic underlayment covers the rest of the deck. Metal drip edge runs along the eaves and rakes, a starter strip seals the first course, and new flashing goes around chimneys, walls and vents. Ridge vents or other vents let the attic breathe, which keeps shingles from cooking in summer and helps prevent ice dams in winter.
Where the shingles meet the gutter
The bottom course of shingles should overhang the drip edge slightly so water drops into the gutter instead of curling back onto the fascia. If the shingles stop short, water runs behind the gutter. If they hang too far, heavy rain shoots past it. Granules also wash off shingles into the gutters, and a heavy layer of grit in the gutter is a useful clue that the shingles are aging. Because New Jersey Gutter installs both, the shingle line and the gutters are set to work together.
Signs a shingle roof is wearing out
- Shingles curling at the edges or cupping in the middle.
- Bald spots where the granules have worn away.
- Missing or creased shingles after a windstorm.
- Dark streaks and moss on shaded slopes.
- Stains on the ceiling or in the attic after rain.
- A sagging roofline or soft spots in the decking.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
7 questions and answers in 4 topics: Pricing, Process, Warranty, Service area.
Pricing
Are architectural shingles worth the extra cost?
For most houses, yes. They resist wind better, usually carry a longer expected life and hide small unevenness in the deck. Three-tab shingles remain a reasonable choice for outbuildings or a tight budget.
How do I get a quote?
Call (888) 611-3987 or request a free estimate online. The office is open Monday–Friday 7:00 AM–5:00 PM; Saturday 9:00 AM–4:00 PM.
Process
How long does a shingle roof last in New Jersey?
Architectural shingles often last 20 to 30 years and 3-tab shingles somewhat less. Attic ventilation, sun exposure, tree cover and the quality of the original installation all move that number in either direction.
Can new shingles go over my old ones?
Building code allows a second layer over a single existing one in some cases, but a tear-off is usually the better choice. It lets the decking be inspected and repaired and lets new ice-and-water membrane and drip edge go down properly. A new roof cannot go over two existing layers.
Why is there so much grit in my gutters?
Those are shingle granules. Some loss is normal on a new roof and after storms. Steady heavy loss on an older roof means the shingles are wearing thin, and it is worth having the roof looked at.
