Vinyl Siding
Vinyl is one of the most common sidings on New Jersey homes because it does not need paint, cleans with a hose and costs less than most alternatives. How well it looks and performs over the years depends a great deal on the product chosen and how it is hung.

Profiles, thickness and insulated vinyl
Vinyl comes in traditional lap profiles, Dutch lap, board-and-batten and shake or shingle styles for gables and accents. Thicker panels are stiffer, lie flatter on the wall and resist dents and wind better. Insulated vinyl has a foam backing that adds rigidity and a modest insulating layer. Darker colors are available, but they absorb more heat, so products rated for darker colors should be used.
Why vinyl is hung loose
Vinyl expands in summer heat and contracts in winter cold, and a long panel can move noticeably across a season. It is nailed through the center of slotted holes, with the nail head left slightly proud so the panel can slide, and gaps are left at corners and channels. Nailing it tight is the most common installation mistake and causes the waves and buckles seen on some houses.
Cold, sun and reflected heat
Vinyl becomes less flexible in very cold weather, so impacts in winter are more likely to crack it. Strong sun fades colors over the years, more on south and west walls. Sunlight reflected from some energy-efficient windows on neighboring houses can concentrate enough heat to warp vinyl, a problem worth noting if you see distortion in one spot.
Upkeep and gutters
Vinyl needs washing now and then with a soft brush and garden hose; high-pressure washing can drive water behind the panels. Black streaks and green growth below a gutter usually mean the gutter is overflowing or dripping. Keeping the gutters clear, or adding gutter guards, keeps the siding cleaner.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
6 questions and answers in 4 topics: Pricing, Process, Warranty, Service area.
Pricing
How do I get a quote?
Call (888) 611-3987 or request a free estimate online. The office is open Monday–Friday 7:00 AM–5:00 PM; Saturday 9:00 AM–4:00 PM.
Process
How long does vinyl siding last?
Good vinyl often lasts 20 to 40 years. Fading, brittleness and damage from impacts usually decide when it is replaced, rather than outright failure.
Can vinyl siding be painted?
It can, with paints made for vinyl in colors no darker than the manufacturer allows, but most homeowners replace badly faded vinyl rather than commit to repainting it.
Why is my vinyl siding wavy?
It was probably nailed too tight, so it could not expand in the heat. Rehanging the affected panels correctly usually fixes it.
