Metal Roofs
A metal roof is a long-term choice. It sheds snow and rain quickly, resists wind and does not lose granules the way asphalt does. It also behaves differently from shingles in ways that matter for the gutters below it, especially in a New Jersey winter.

Standing seam panels and metal shingles
Standing seam roofing uses long vertical panels joined by raised seams, with the fasteners hidden under the seam or in concealed clips. That leaves no exposed screws to loosen over time, and it is the common choice for whole houses, porch roofs and accent sections. Metal shingles are stamped to look like shakes, slate or tile and install in smaller pieces, which suits homeowners who want the durability of metal with a more traditional look. Exposed-fastener panels with screws through the face are mainly used on barns, sheds and outbuildings.
How a metal roof is installed
Metal goes down over a solid deck with a high-temperature underlayment, since the metal itself gets hot in the sun. Panels are measured and cut to fit each slope, and trim pieces cover the eaves, rakes, ridges, valleys and wall joints. Metal expands and contracts with temperature, so clips and fasteners are chosen to let panels move without tearing at the screws. Flashing around chimneys and vents is custom bent to match the panels.
Snow slide and your gutters
Snow sits on shingles until it melts, but on metal it tends to let go all at once and slide off in a sheet. That sheet can bend or tear off gutters that are not built for it and can land hard on walkways and entries. Snow guards installed in rows above the eaves hold snow in place so it melts off gradually. Gutters under a metal roof should be hung with sturdy hidden hangers spaced closely, and the run should sit low enough that sliding snow clears the outer lip. We look at the gutters and the roof edge together for this reason.
Lifespan and upkeep
A well-installed metal roof often lasts 40 years or more, considerably longer than asphalt. Upkeep is light: check sealant at trim and penetrations, keep debris out of valleys and watch for scratches that expose bare metal. On exposed-fastener panels, the rubber washers under the screws break down over time and the screws need to be checked and replaced where they have backed out.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
7 questions and answers in 5 topics: Pricing, Process, Guards, Warranty, Service area.
Pricing
How do I get a quote?
Call (888) 611-3987 or request a free estimate online. The office is open Monday–Friday 7:00 AM–5:00 PM; Saturday 9:00 AM–4:00 PM.
Process
Is a metal roof loud in the rain?
Over a solid deck with underlayment and an insulated attic, most homeowners find it no louder than shingles. The drumming people remember comes from metal fastened over open framing on barns and sheds.
Does a metal roof attract lightning?
No. Metal does not make a strike more likely. If lightning does strike, metal is noncombustible, which is a point in its favor.
Can metal go on a low-slope section?
Some standing seam systems are rated for fairly low slopes, but very flat areas are better served by a membrane. See flat roofs for those sections.
Guards
Do I need snow guards?
On most metal roofs in New Jersey, yes, at least above entries, walkways, decks and lower roofs. They also protect the gutters from snow sliding off in one sheet.
Warranty
