Heated Gutters

In a New Jersey winter, snow melts by day and refreezes by night. A heated gutter keeps a clear path for that meltwater, so it drains instead of building ice in the gutter and downspout.

How ice dams form in a freeze-thaw winter

Heat escaping through the attic warms the roof deck and melts the underside of the snow. The meltwater runs down to the eave, which hangs past the warm house and stays cold, and it freezes there. Each melt adds to the ridge of ice until water backs up behind it and works under the shingles. New Jersey winters swing above and below freezing again and again, which is exactly the pattern that builds dams.

What frozen gutters and icicles cost you

  • Water forced under shingles, leading to stained ceilings and rotted roof deck.
  • Ice weight that bends gutters and pulls hangers out of the fascia.
  • Downspouts split open by water freezing inside them.
  • Heavy icicles over doors, walks and driveways.
  • Refrozen puddles where downspouts empty onto paths.

How the Heater Cap system works

NJ Gutter installs Heater Cap, a heated gutter system built around self-regulating heat cable. It warms both the gutter and the downspout, so water has an open route from the roof edge to the ground. The low-profile design sits along the roofline without drawing attention. Heater Cap can be retrofitted to most existing aluminum and copper gutters, or installed along with new gutters.

Heater Cap compared with loose heat tape

The common alternative is heat tape or cable clipped to the shingles in a zigzag and dropped loosely into the gutter. It melts narrow channels, and ice can bridge over the wire and keep building around it. Loose cable is also exposed to falling ice and snow raking, and it is easy to see from the street. Heater Cap is an integrated system, so the heat goes where water needs to flow.

Electricity use

Self-regulating cable changes its own output with the temperature around it. It draws full power only when it is cold and there is snow or ice to clear, and far less when conditions ease. The system needs an outdoor circuit with ground-fault protection, as any outdoor electrical equipment does, and we will go over power and switching during the estimate.

What heated gutters do not do

Heater Cap prevents ice in the gutters and downspouts, which is where most dam damage starts. It does not heat the whole roof, so ice can still form higher up when an attic loses a lot of heat. Better attic insulation and ventilation address that; our roofing team can look at the roof side of the problem.

Where a heated gutter makes sense

It earns its keep on north-facing and shaded eaves, gutters over entries and walkways, runs below roof valleys, and any home that has had ice dams before. To see whether your roofline is a good fit, book a free estimate.

We have used NJ Gutters for all of our gutter work. It does take some time to get on their busy schedule, but it is definitely worth the wait. They are the best. Whenever we ask trusted contractors (both our builder and roofer) for gutter work recommendations, they always say NJ Gutters. They are trusted by both excellent contractors and homeowners. NJ Gutters most recently installed gutter caps and we were a little hesitant to install them because we were worried about how they would look, but they are hardly noticeable and the result is great. Highly recommend NJ Gutters for all of your gutter work!

After 20 years, my gutters and downspouts were in dire need for repair. I did research sent out bids got several companies. NJ Gutter was the most responsive and price competitive of the four companies who responded. They performed a thorough site visit including getting access to my roof and inspecting all of the areas. They didn’t just suggest swapping in new materials but improving the “pitch” of some of my gutters, leaf guards and the size of the gutters/down spouts. The “repair” team was fantastic. They were courteous, thorough, diligent and maintained a clean work environment. They also pointed out some additional “damaged wood” that needed replacing. They gutters/downspouts look great. I would highly recommend using them for any gutter issues you might have.

I do not typically provide reviews of business' but in this case it is without question necessary. Jimmy from the start of the project was great to work with and very reasonable regarding pricing. With all the material increases happening in the market Jimmy was able to maintain pricing for the project even though it took well over a year in order to put the funding together. This project entailed the removal and re-installation of gutters as well as snow guards at a commercial property. To say the work was flawless is an understatement. New Jersey Gutter is a well run business and it shows. Jimmy as well as staff (Rachel) were a pleasure to work with and should we need any services in the future we will certainly be reaching back out to them. A+++++

We couldn't be happier with our new gutters and gutter guards. We hired NJ Gutters based on perceived quality of workmanship and attention to detail, and our expectations were not only met but exceeded. In addition to functionality, the new gutters look so much nicer than the old ones. Travis and Rosie were top-notch professional installers and nice people as well, insuring everything is as we wanted.

Process

Can Heater Cap go on my existing gutters?

In most cases, yes. It is designed to retrofit onto most existing aluminum and copper gutters. If your gutters are loose, leaking or near the end of their life, installing it with new gutters is usually the better plan.

Do heated gutters use a lot of electricity?

Self-regulating cable only draws full power when it is cold and there is snow or ice to melt, and it throttles back as conditions ease. That makes it far more economical than cable that runs at full output all the time.

Will heated gutters stop every ice dam?

They stop ice from forming in the gutters and downspouts, which is where most problems begin. Ice can still form higher on the roof if the attic loses a lot of heat, so insulation and ventilation matter too.

Do I need to heat every gutter on the house?

Not always. Many homes heat only the problem areas: shaded or north-facing eaves, runs below valleys and gutters over doors and walks. The estimate looks at where ice has formed before.

Warranty

What warranty does New Jersey Gutter offer?

New Jersey Gutter backs its work with a workmanship warranty. It covers how the job was done: seams, hangers, pitch and fastening. Gutters, guards and other products also carry their manufacturer's material warranty. Your length and terms are written on your estimate and invoice.
