New siding and trim
A new weather barrier and window flashing go on, then the new siding, in vinyl or fiber cement. Soffit, fascia and window trim are usually replaced or wrapped at the same time so the whole exterior is finished together. Changing material, from aluminum or wood to vinyl or fiber cement, is common at this point.
Fixing the water at its source
If the old siding failed because water was running down the wall, new siding alone will not stop it. A gutter that overflows, sags or leaks behind itself, a missing kickout flashing at a roof edge, or downspouts that dump against the foundation all need to be corrected.
