Yankee Gutters
A Yankee gutter is part of the roof itself: a lined trough formed on the roof surface just above the edge, instead of a gutter hanging below it. Found on older New England-style homes, it needs different care.

How a Yankee gutter is built
Near the bottom of the roof, a raised strip or a short extension of the cornice creates a shallow channel running along the eave. The channel is lined with metal, traditionally tin, terne or copper, and the lining is carried up under the roofing above it so water flows from the shingles into the trough. Outlets in the channel feed downspouts that drop through or alongside the cornice. From the ground, the roof edge simply looks thick and clean, with no gutter hanging from it. Many people call these box or built-in gutters; the names overlap, and the repair options are similar.
How to tell if you have one
- No gutter hangs below the roof edge, yet the house has downspouts
- Downspouts appear to start at the cornice rather than at a visible trough
- From an upstairs window you can see a lip or ridge running along the lower roof
- Water stains or peeling paint concentrate along the top of the cornice
Why Yankee gutters leak
The trough sits on the roof deck, so a failed lining sends water straight into the rafter tails, cornice and top-floor walls. Linings age, solder joints crack, and reroofing work that is not tied correctly into the lining leaves a gap at the top edge. New Jersey winters add ice: snow melting higher on a warm roof refreezes in the trough, ice dams form, and meltwater backs up under the shingles and over the lining. Leaves matter too. A Yankee gutter with clogged outlets holds water against every seam until something gives.
Maintenance that keeps them working
Clear the trough and outlets in late spring and again after the fall leaf drop, and look over the lining for cracks, lifted seams and rust. Keep the cornice painted so the wood stays protected if a small leak starts. After a heavy snow, watch for ice building along the edge. Because the trough is on the roof, cleaning means working on the roof surface; professional gutter cleaning is the safer route on most two-story homes.
Repair, reline or convert
There are three broad paths, and the right one depends on what an on-site inspection finds in the lining and the wood beneath it.
- Repair: reseal or re-solder isolated joints and patch small areas when the rest of the lining and framing are sound
- Reline: install a new metal lining or a membrane over a sound trough, keeping the original look of the house
- Convert: remove or close in the trough, rebuild the roof edge, and hang an exterior gutter such as half-round or K-style on the fascia
Thinking about conversion
Conversion is often chosen when the framing under the trough has rotted or when leaks keep returning. It changes the roof edge, so it is usually planned with roofing work and may need approval on a house in a historic district. Keeping the built-in gutter preserves the original cornice line; converting trades that for a system that is easier to inspect and maintain. Process
Is a Yankee gutter worth keeping?
Often, if the framing is sound and you value the original roofline. A good relining can give years of service. If the wood beneath is rotted or leaks keep returning after repairs, conversion may be the better long-term choice. An on-site inspection settles it.
Does a new roof affect my Yankee gutter?
Yes. The lining has to be tied in correctly under the new roofing, or the top edge of the trough will leak. Reroofing is also the natural time to reline or convert, since the roof edge is already open.
How do I know if my Yankee gutter is leaking?
Look for stained or peeling cornice paint, soft wood at the eave, and ceiling stains near exterior walls on the top floor, especially after heavy rain or snowmelt. Book a free estimate to have the lining and framing checked.
Guards
Can I put gutter guards on a Yankee gutter?
Standard guards are designed for hung gutters and rarely fit a trough built into the roof. Strainers on the outlets help, along with regular cleaning. Ask during an inspection what suits your specific gutter.
