Downspouts & Drainage

A gutter only works as well as its downspouts. They decide how fast roof water leaves the gutter and where it lands, and that is what protects basements, foundations and planting beds.

Why downspouts matter as much as gutters

Every gallon a gutter collects has to leave through an outlet. If a downspout is too small, too far away or clogged at an elbow, the gutter fills and overflows no matter how clean it is. In a nor'easter or a summer cloudburst, an undersized downspout is often the first part of the system to give up.

2x3 or 3x4 downspouts

Rectangular aluminum downspouts come in two common sizes. A 2x3 handles small roof areas such as porches, dormers and short runs. A 3x4 carries roughly twice the water and resists clogging because leaves pass through more easily, which is why it pairs with 6-inch gutters and large roof planes.

Under heavy tree cover, 3x4 is usually the safer pick. Half-round gutters take round downspouts, typically 3- or 4-inch, which keep the traditional look. Copper gutters get copper downspouts so the whole system weathers to the same patina.

How many downspouts, and where

General practice is a downspout for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter, with long runs drained at both ends. Roof valleys pour a concentrated stream into one spot, so an outlet near a valley keeps that stretch from overflowing. Placement also matters on the ground: a downspout should not empty across a walkway, onto a driveway where it will freeze, or into a patio corner with nowhere to drain.

Moving water away from the foundation

The aim is to land roof water at least 4 feet from the foundation, and up to 10 feet where the yard slopes back toward the house or the basement has a history of dampness.

  • Elbows turn the downspout out from the wall at the bottom.
  • Extensions carry water farther across the lawn or bed.
  • Hinged extensions lift out of the way for mowing and walkways.
  • Splash blocks spread the stream so it does not dig a hole.
  • Soil graded away from the house keeps water from flowing back.

Underground drain lines, explained

Some properties send downspouts into buried pipe that runs to a daylight outlet farther down the yard, to the curb or to a dry well. It keeps extensions off the lawn, but buried lines can clog with leaves and are hard to clear without a cleanout, and outlets can freeze.

Downspout repairs and clogs

Straps work loose, elbows get crushed by lawn equipment, and ice splits seams. Loose sections are refastened and damaged pieces replaced as part of a gutter repair. Clogs at elbows are cleared during a gutter cleaning. If a downspout clogs every season, it is often too small for the roof above it. To size outlets for your house, book a free estimate.

I hired NJ Gutters to replace my 5" K-styles. They recommended a 6" replacement and suggested round, rather than the typical rectangular downspouts. I am totally pleased with their work and the results. They worked neatly and cleaned up well before leaving. I would recommend NJ Gutters without hesitation. When they received my check, they called me back to tell me that I missed an available discount by paying by check rather than credit card. The invited my to send in the discounted amount, a savings of almost $100. That is a class act!

After 20 years, my gutters and downspouts were in dire need for repair. I did research sent out bids got several companies. NJ Gutter was the most responsive and price competitive of the four companies who responded. They performed a thorough site visit including getting access to my roof and inspecting all of the areas. They didn’t just suggest swapping in new materials but improving the “pitch” of some of my gutters, leaf guards and the size of the gutters/down spouts. The “repair” team was fantastic. They were courteous, thorough, diligent and maintained a clean work environment. They also pointed out some additional “damaged wood” that needed replacing. They gutters/downspouts look great. I would highly recommend using them for any gutter issues you might have.

As always another great cleaning job. They said 2 to 3 weeks to be here and they were right on schedule. Update: there was an area on one of the gutters that began to leak after the cleaning. They came back twice to make sure that the problem was corrected. I have had leaders and gutters as well as guards placed on my home and office by these guys. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Process

Should I upgrade to 3x4 downspouts?

If your gutters overflow near the outlets in heavy rain, or your downspouts clog with leaves every fall, the larger size usually helps. It is standard with 6-inch gutters and a good match for big roof areas and treed lots.

How far should a downspout drain from my house?

At least 4 feet from the foundation, and farther, up to about 10 feet, where the ground slopes toward the house or the basement takes on water. Extensions and splash blocks are the simplest way to get there.

Can I add another downspout to an existing gutter?

Usually, yes. A new outlet is cut into the gutter, the run is checked to slope toward it, and the downspout is strapped to the wall. It is a common fix for long runs that overflow in the middle.

Do you install underground drains?

No. We install and repair downspouts, elbows and extensions, and we will explain where the water from each downspout should end up. Buried lines and dry wells are planned separately.
