K-Style Gutters
Walk any street in Union or Morris County and most of the gutters you see are K-style. The profile became the standard because it carries a lot of water for its size, hangs neatly on a fascia board and suits most house styles.

What the K-style profile is
Seen from the end, a K-style gutter has a flat back, a flat bottom and a front face shaped in curves and steps. That front echoes the crown molding used on interior ceilings, which is why it looks at home under the trim of a Colonial or a split-level. The flat back is the practical part. It sits tight against the fascia board, so the gutter can be fastened along its whole length without spacers or exposed brackets.
Why K-style carries more water
Capacity depends on the cross-section, and a flat bottom with straight sides holds more than a rounded trough of the same top width. In practice a 5-inch K-style gutter carries noticeably more than a 5-inch half-round, which matters when a summer thunderstorm or a nor'easter drops a lot of rain in a short time. That extra room also gives a little margin when leaves start to collect before the fall cleaning.
Sizes and materials
- 5-inch: the standard for most homes, usually paired with 2x3 or 3x4 downspouts
- 6-inch: for large or steep roofs and long runs, paired with 3x4 downspouts
- Aluminum: the usual choice, formed seamless on site in many colors
- Copper: formed seamless and soldered at corners, for homes where the metal is part of the look; see copper gutters
How K-style gutters are hung
Hidden hangers clip into the front lip and screw through the back into the fascia, so nothing shows from the ground. Because the hangers sit inside, the front face stays clean and continuous. The detailed sizing questions, including how roof pitch and area decide between 5-inch and 6-inch, are covered on the gutter installation page.
Which houses suit K-style
K-style fits ranches, Cape Cods, Colonials, split-levels and most newer construction, as well as many commercial buildings with a standard fascia. It is a less natural fit for houses without a flat fascia board, such as some older homes with built-in gutters, and for historic exteriors where rounded gutters and round downspouts are the period detail. On those, half-round gutters are worth a look.
Cleaning and guards on K-style
The stepped inside corners of a K-style gutter can hold fine grit and decomposing leaves, so a hand scoop and a hose rinse do a better job than a quick blow-out. Most gutter guards are designed around this profile and fit it well, which makes K-style the easiest shape to protect against oak tassels and pine needles.

Frequently asked questions
7 questions and answers in 5 topics: Pricing, Process, Guards, Warranty, Service area.
Pricing

Call (888) 611-3987 or request a free estimate online. The office is open Monday–Friday 7:00 AM–5:00 PM; Saturday 9:00 AM–4:00 PM.
Process
Are K-style gutters better than half-round?
For capacity and cost, usually yes: K-style holds more water at the same width and costs less to install. Half-round wins on period appearance and has a smooth interior that rinses clean easily. The right choice depends on the house and how much rain the roof collects.
Can I switch from half-round to K-style?
Yes, if the house has a fascia board for the flat back to mount against. Half-round is sometimes hung on brackets attached to the roof, so the installer checks whether the fascia is sound and straight before recommending a switch.
What color K-style gutters should I choose?
Most homeowners match the trim, so the gutter blends into the fascia. Matching the roof or a dark siding color also works. Bring a sample of the trim if you can, or book a free estimate and compare color chips against the house in daylight.
Guards
Do K-style gutters work with gutter guards?
They are the profile most guards are designed for. Covers such as Gutter Cap sit on the front lip and tuck under the roof edge, keeping leaves out while letting water in. See gutter guards for the options.
Warranty
What warranty does New Jersey Gutter offer?
New Jersey Gutter backs its work with a workmanship warranty. It covers how the job was done: seams, hangers, pitch and fastening. Gutters, guards and other products also carry their manufacturer's material warranty. Your length and terms are written on your estimate and invoice.
