Siding Installation
Siding is the visible layer of a wall system that also includes sheathing, a weather-resistive barrier and flashing. A good installation treats the siding as the outer rain screen and relies on the layers behind it to handle any water that gets past.

Preparing the wall
Installation starts with a sound, flat wall. Damaged sheathing is replaced, and a weather-resistive barrier, usually a house wrap, is installed and lapped so water always runs over the layer below it, never behind it. Windows and doors get flashing tape and, where needed, metal head flashing. This layer is what keeps the wall dry over the long run, and it is invisible once the siding is on.
Hanging the siding
A starter strip goes along the bottom of the wall, and corner posts and J-channel frame the walls, windows and doors. Vinyl panels are hung loosely on their nails so they can expand and contract with temperature. Fiber cement boards are nailed tight following the manufacturer's pattern, with joints flashed or gapped and caulked as specified. Panels are kept clear of roof surfaces and the ground so they do not wick up water.
Trim, soffit and fascia
At the top of the wall, the siding meets the soffit under the roof overhang. Vented soffit panels let air into the attic, which helps with roof ventilation. Wood fascia is often wrapped in aluminum trim coil to keep it from rotting and peeling. Window and door trim is wrapped or replaced to match. This is the area where siding, roofing and gutters overlap, so it is planned with all three in mind.
Gutters, kickouts and water at the wall
Gutters are usually taken down before siding and trim work and reinstalled or replaced afterward on the new fascia. Wherever a roof edge ends against a sidewall, a kickout flashing directs water into the gutter instead of letting it pour down the wall, one of the most common causes of hidden rot. Downspouts are strapped to the new siding and run to drain away from the foundation. See gutter installation for that side of the job.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
7 questions and answers in 4 topics: Pricing, Process, Warranty, Service area.
Pricing
What does siding installation cost?
It is priced per square foot of wall. The siding installation cost guide explains the researched ranges for vinyl, fiber cement and removal.
How do I get a quote?
Call (888) 611-3987 or request a free estimate online. The office is open Monday–Friday 7:00 AM–5:00 PM; Saturday 9:00 AM–4:00 PM.
Process
How long does siding installation take?
Most homes take several days to about two weeks, depending on size, the material, the amount of trim work and whether old siding is removed first.
Is house wrap really necessary?
Yes. Siding sheds most rain, but some always gets behind it. The weather barrier and flashing behind the siding are what keep that water out of the wall.
Is soffit and fascia work part of a siding job?
Usually. The soffit, fascia wrap and window trim meet the siding at the top of the wall and around openings, and the fascia carries the gutters, so they are planned and quoted with the siding.
