Gutter Repair

Most gutter failures start small: a drip at a corner, a run that sags after an icy winter, a puddle that never drains. Caught early, each one is a contained repair rather than a new gutter system.

Leaking seams, corners and end caps

Seamless gutters still have joints at corners, end caps and downspout outlets, and the sealant there breaks down with sun and freeze-thaw cycles. A leak shows up as a drip line on the siding or a worn spot in the mulch below. The fix is to scrape out the old sealant, clean and dry the joint, refasten it if it has loosened and reseal it with gutter sealant made to stay flexible.

Sagging gutters and hidden hangers

Older gutters were often held with long spikes driven through the gutter into the fascia. Over the years those spikes work loose, and the weight of wet leaves, snow and ice pulls the run into a dip. We rehang sagging runs with hidden hangers screwed into solid fascia, spaced closely enough to carry snow load, and confirm the wood behind them is sound before tightening anything.

Standing water and re-pitching

A gutter should fall toward its downspout by about a quarter inch for every 10 feet. Settling, loose hangers or a careless install can leave it flat or sloped the wrong way, so water sits, freezes and breeds mosquitoes. Re-pitching means loosening the run, snapping a new line along the fascia and resetting the hangers to it. Very long runs are often pitched from the middle toward a downspout at each end.

Pulled downspouts and dented sections

Downspouts get knocked loose by ladders, lawn equipment and ice that freezes inside them. They are reattached with new straps, and crushed elbows or split pieces are replaced. A gutter section dented by a falling branch or a ladder will hold water at the dent; that piece can be replaced with a matching profile and color. More on outlets is on the downspouts and drainage page.

Fascia rot behind the gutter

Many older New Jersey homes have wood fascia boards, and years of overflow soak into them. Soft or crumbling wood, peeling paint and gutters that will not stay tight all point to rot. The gutter has to come down, the rotted board is replaced, and then the gutter goes back up on solid wood. If the damage reaches the roof deck at the eave, our roofing crew can look at it.

After 20 years, my gutters and downspouts were in dire need for repair. I did research sent out bids got several companies. NJ Gutter was the most responsive and price competitive of the four companies who responded. They performed a thorough site visit including getting access to my roof and inspecting all of the areas. They didn’t just suggest swapping in new materials but improving the “pitch” of some of my gutters, leaf guards and the size of the gutters/down spouts. The “repair” team was fantastic. They were courteous, thorough, diligent and maintained a clean work environment. They also pointed out some additional “damaged wood” that needed replacing. They gutters/downspouts look great. I would highly recommend using them for any gutter issues you might have.

We were scheduled for gutter installation at the onset of COVID-19. Unfortunately, due to government shut downs, our insulation was put on hold. We were insured that as soon as New Jersey Gutters was permitted to begin working again we would receive a call. That is exactly what happened. As state mandates began to be lifted, we received a call from New Jersey Gutters and asked if we were still interested in the installation. We scheduled a date and they came to the house and completed the installation. Everything worked seamlessly! Great crew of employees! We trust next to nobody in or around our house but felt completely comfortable with all of the employees New Jersey Gutters sent to our house. We will continue to use them for maintenance and repairs if necessary and absolutely recommend them to anyone needing anything from a simple repair to a completely new gutter system.

As always another great cleaning job. They said 2 to 3 weeks to be here and they were right on schedule. Update: there was an area on one of the gutters that began to leak after the cleaning. They came back twice to make sure that the problem was corrected. I have had leaders and gutters as well as guards placed on my home and office by these guys. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

I called NJ Gutters on a friend's recommendation as they did a great job for them. Mine was only a small repair but they didn't treat it as such and made me feel welcome regardless. Other gutter guys either never called me back or set appointments to look at the repair and never showed up. NJ Gutter actually squeezed me in to the get the repair done the same day. Mine may be an unusual case but their crew was already in Flemington for another job and had another cancellation in the same area which is why I was lucky and could get the job done the same day. They gave me a very fair price, completed the work in less than 20 minutes, repaired the hanging gutter and were very communicative throughout the day. I was delighted with the professional service and outcome. I HIGHLY recommend them for all of your gutter needs. George G.

Pricing

Process

Repair or replace?

Repair makes sense when the problem is isolated and the rest of the system is sound. When several runs leak, the gutters are thin or corroded, or each season brings a new repair, gutter replacement usually costs less over time. We will tell you which side of that line your gutters are on when you book a free estimate.

Why do my gutters overflow even though they are clean?

Usually the pitch is wrong, a downspout is blocked lower down, or the gutter is too small for the roof area feeding it. Running water through the system while watching where it pools shows which one it is.

Can a sagging gutter be fixed without replacing it?

Often, yes. If the gutter itself is in good shape and the fascia is solid, rehanging it with hidden hangers and resetting the pitch brings it back into line. Rotted fascia must be replaced first.

Is it worth resealing old gutters?

Resealing a few joints on a sound gutter is a small job that stops water damage. If leaks keep appearing in new places every year, the metal or the joints are failing, and replacement deserves a look.

What damage do leaking gutters cause?

Water running behind the gutter rots fascia and soffit, stains siding and can reach the roof deck. Water dumping at the foundation erodes beds and can find its way into a basement, which is far costlier than the repair.
