Gutter Guards

A gutter guard keeps leaves, needles and seed pods out of the trough so rain can reach the downspouts. The right type depends on which trees hang over your roof and how much debris they drop.

What a gutter guard does, and what it does not

A guard covers the open top of the gutter. Water gets in through fine mesh or by curling around a rounded lip, while most debris stays outside and dries out or blows off. The result is fewer clogged downspouts and less overflow onto beds and foundations. A guard does not make a gutter maintenance-free.

Flat-lying debris such as oak tassels and maple seeds can rest on top, and roof grit settles in time. Plan on a look from the ground after leaf drop and an occasional brush-off. Guards also do not stop ice dams; that is a job for heated gutters.

Five types of gutter guard compared

Micro-mesh

A fine stainless mesh stretched over a rigid frame. It blocks pine needles, tassels and shingle grit, which makes it the strongest all-around choice under mixed New Jersey trees.

Reverse-curve (helmet)

A solid cover with a rounded nose. Water follows the curve into a slot while leaves slide off the edge. It sheds large leaves, but needles can slip into the slot and very heavy rain can run past the lip.

Screen

Perforated aluminum or wire screen. It stops big leaves at a modest cost, yet small seeds and needles pass through or lodge in the holes.

Foam

A wedge that sits inside the gutter. It is inexpensive, but it traps fine debris, can sprout seedlings and breaks down in the sun.

Brush

Long bristles that run the length of the trough. Leaves catch on top, but needles tangle in the bristles, which must be pulled out and cleaned.

Matching the guard to New Jersey trees

Oaks drop tassels in spring and heavy leaves in fall. Maples shed winged seeds in spring and broad leaves later. Pines drop needles all year, and needles find their way through anything coarser than micro-mesh. A lot with even one pine near the roofline usually points to micro-mesh; a home with only distant broad-leaf trees may do fine with a screen.

Gutter Cap, color-matched to your roof

NJ Gutter installs Gutter Cap, offered in a range of shades chosen to blend with asphalt shingles, metal roofing or tile. It is fitted on homes, commercial buildings and multi-family properties, either on sound existing gutters or along with new seamless gutters.

How a guard installation goes

  • A free estimate: we look at the trees, roof pitch and the condition of the gutters.
  • The gutters are cleaned and the downspouts flushed before anything is covered.
  • Loose hangers, leaking seams and poor pitch are corrected first.
  • Guard sections are cut to length, fitted at corners and fastened without lifting shingles.
  • Water is run through to confirm flow, and the debris is hauled away.

Fix the gutters before covering them

A guard on a sagging or undersized gutter only hides the problem. If runs pull away from the fascia or hold standing water, a repair comes first. Worn-out gutters are better replaced and guarded in one visit. To see what fits your house, book a free estimate.

We have used NJ Gutters for all of our gutter work. It does take some time to get on their busy schedule, but it is definitely worth the wait. They are the best. Whenever we ask trusted contractors (both our builder and roofer) for gutter work recommendations, they always say NJ Gutters. They are trusted by both excellent contractors and homeowners. NJ Gutters most recently installed gutter caps and we were a little hesitant to install them because we were worried about how they would look, but they are hardly noticeable and the result is great. Highly recommend NJ Gutters for all of your gutter work!

After 20 years, my gutters and downspouts were in dire need for repair. I did research sent out bids got several companies. NJ Gutter was the most responsive and price competitive of the four companies who responded. They performed a thorough site visit including getting access to my roof and inspecting all of the areas. They didn’t just suggest swapping in new materials but improving the “pitch” of some of my gutters, leaf guards and the size of the gutters/down spouts. The “repair” team was fantastic. They were courteous, thorough, diligent and maintained a clean work environment. They also pointed out some additional “damaged wood” that needed replacing. They gutters/downspouts look great. I would highly recommend using them for any gutter issues you might have.

I do not typically provide reviews of business' but in this case it is without question necessary. Jimmy from the start of the project was great to work with and very reasonable regarding pricing. With all the material increases happening in the market Jimmy was able to maintain pricing for the project even though it took well over a year in order to put the funding together. This project entailed the removal and re-installation of gutters as well as snow guards at a commercial property. To say the work was flawless is an understatement. New Jersey Gutter is a well run business and it shows. Jimmy as well as staff (Rachel) were a pleasure to work with and should we need any services in the future we will certainly be reaching back out to them. A+++++

We couldn't be happier with our new gutters and gutter guards. We hired NJ Gutters based on perceived quality of workmanship and attention to detail, and our expectations were not only met but exceeded. In addition to functionality, the new gutters look so much nicer than the old ones. Travis and Rosie were top-notch professional installers and nice people as well, insuring everything is as we wanted.

Pricing

Guards

Do I still need gutter cleaning if I have guards?

Much less of it. A good guard keeps the inside of the gutter clear, but debris can collect on top and roof grit can build up over the years. A check after fall leaf drop and an occasional brush-off or rinse keeps water flowing through.

Which gutter guard works with pine needles?

Fine micro-mesh is the type that reliably keeps pine needles out. Screens, brushes and reverse-curve covers tend to let needles slip through or tangle, so they need more attention under pines.

Can gutter guards go on my existing gutters?

Usually, as long as the gutters are firmly attached, pitched to drain and free of leaks. We clean and check them first. If a run is sagging or rusted through, it should be repaired or replaced before a guard goes on.

Will gutter guards damage my roof?

They should not when they are attached correctly. The guard is fastened to the gutter and set at the roof edge without prying up shingles or driving fasteners through them, so the roof surface is left as it was.

Do gutter guards prevent ice in winter?

Not on their own. Keeping debris out helps meltwater drain, but ice can still form in the gutter and downspouts during freeze-thaw swings. Homes with a history of ice dams should look at a heated gutter system.
