Fiber Cement Siding
Fiber cement siding is made from cement, sand and cellulose fibers pressed into boards and panels. It has the look of painted wood clapboard without the rot and insect problems, and it is rigid and heavy in a way vinyl is not.

Why homeowners choose it
Fiber cement holds a crisp, straight line on the wall and takes paint well, so it reads as traditional wood siding on older and historic-style homes. It is noncombustible, it resists dents and impact better than vinyl, and insects do not eat it. It costs more than vinyl to buy and install, and it needs repainting over the years, though factory-finished boards hold their color for a long time.
How it is installed
Boards are heavy and are cut outdoors with dust-reducing saws and blades, since cutting cement produces silica dust. They go over a weather barrier and are nailed tight to the manufacturer's pattern, unlike vinyl. Butt joints get a flashing behind them or are caulked as specified, and boards are kept a set distance above roofs, decks and the ground so the cut ends never sit in water.
Finish and upkeep
Fiber cement comes primed for painting on site or prefinished at the factory. Upkeep is checking and renewing caulk at joints and trim and repainting when the finish wears. Boards should not stay wet: water dripping from an overflowing gutter or splashing up from a roof can soak the bottom edges, which is why the gutters and roof-to-wall flashing are checked with every installation.
Fiber cement and the rest of the exterior
Fiber cement is often paired with matching trim boards and soffit for a uniform painted look. Where a roof meets a sidewall, a kickout flashing directs water into the gutter, and the boards are held back from the shingles. Planning the roofing, gutters and siding together keeps those clearances right.

Process
Is fiber cement better than vinyl?
It depends on priorities. Fiber cement looks more like wood, resists fire and impact and lasts a long time, but costs more and needs painting. Vinyl costs less and needs almost no upkeep. See vinyl siding to compare.
How long does fiber cement siding last?
Well-installed fiber cement often lasts 30 to 50 years. The paint finish needs renewing along the way, and caulked joints need occasional attention.
Can fiber cement get wet?
It handles rain on the wall just fine. Problems come from boards sitting in water or edges soaked repeatedly, which correct clearances and working gutters prevent.
