Gutter guard types compared

Every gutter guard keeps out leaves. They differ on pine needles, seed pods, heavy downpours and how much upkeep they still need. Compare the five common types below and pick what matters most to you.

Which gutter guard fits your home?

Four questions about your trees, your roof and what matters to you. The answer is one of the guards we install, with a link to its row in the comparison below.

The short version

  1. Micro-mesh
    • Pines or other needle trees anywhere near the roofline
    • Oak tassels, catkins and seeds that pack into open gutters
    • Steep roofs where climbing up to clean is risky
  2. Gutter Cap
    • Homes where the guard should match the roof
    • Metal or tile roofs as well as asphalt shingles
    • Sound existing gutters, or new seamless gutters
  3. Screen
    • Broad-leaf trees that are not right over the roof
    • Keeping the upfront cost down

Guards do not stop ice dams. If ice builds up along your roof edge in winter, ask about heated gutters. Heated gutters

Reading the comparison

Fine debris means pine needles, maple seeds and shingle grit, the material that slips through larger openings. Heavy rain is how well the guard lets a summer downpour into the gutter instead of over it. Upkeep is how often the guard itself needs brushing off or lifting out. Ranges are installed prices per linear foot from researched New Jersey and national sources. They move with the roof height, the condition of the gutters underneath and the brand.

Fix the gutters first

A guard on a sagging, leaking or badly pitched gutter keeps the problem and hides it. The team checks pitch, seams and hangers before a guard goes on, and cleans the gutters as part of the installation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

3 questions and answers.

Which gutter guard is best for pine needles?

Fine micro-mesh is the type that reliably stops pine needles. Screens and foam let them through or trap them, and brush guards catch them in the bristles.

Do gutter guards mean I never clean my gutters?

No guard is maintenance-free. Mesh guards usually need only an occasional brush-off of the top surface; screens, foam and brush guards need more.

Do gutter guards void a roof warranty?

A guard fastened so it does not lift or nail through the shingles avoids that. Ask about the attachment method at your estimate.
